Pediatric Surgery

The prospect of surgery can be overwhelming to children who most often don't know what to expect.  At Suburban Surgery Center we understand this fear of the unknown and want to do whatever we can to make your child comfortable with our medical facility and the people who will be caring for him or her.  We are well prepared to meet the needs of our younger surgical patients and their parents.

BEFORE SURGERY.....

We'd be happy to offer you and your child a pre-operative tour of the center.  You'll have the opportunity to meet some of our staff, see the preoperative and post operative rooms and, situation permitting, the operating room.  We can explain what will take place in each area and offer a chance for you and your child to ask questions.  There's no need to schedule this visit.   Just give us a call between 8 am and 3 pm weekdays and let us know that you'd like to stop by.  We hope this time will help your child see and understand what will take place the day of surgery and ease their minds!

A nurse from the Center will call you a couple days ahead of time to give you preoperative instructions for your child and the time to arrive at the Center on the day of surgery.

THE DAY OF SURGERY...

You'll arrive at the Center and register with the receptionist. The pre-op nurse will take you and your child to the pre-operative waiting area. Children are allowed to bring a favorite toy or blanket with them if they wish. Both parents are allowed to stay with the child in the pre-op area during surgical preparation and until he/she is taken into the operating room.

When surgery is finished, your doctor will come out to speak with you.  Your child will go to the Phase I recovery room until they awaken from anesthesia.  In order to ensure the best possible care for your child and all our other patients, parents are asked to wait in the waiting area during this time.   However, be assured that the time spent in Phase I recovery will be as minimal as necessary and you'll be back with your child as soon as possible.

When your child is transferred to Phase II recovery, you are welcome to remain with them until discharge. You'll be given verbal and written instructions on care of your child at home.
