Pre-Operative Instructions
  • Please don't have ANYTHING to eat or drink (including water) after midnight on the day of surgery.
  • Patients having GI procedures (i.e.: colonoscopy, gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy) should follow the dietary restrictions and preparation instructions given to them by their physician's office.
  • Other instructions may apply to you and the nurse will give you specific instructions during your pre-op phone call.
  • If you have ANY kind of sedation, you will not be allowed to drive for 24 hours after surgery. You MUST make arrangements for a responsible adult companion to take you home from the Center after surgery and stay with you for 24 hours.
  • Don't bring any valuables or jewelry to the center (wedding bands are OK)
  • If you wear contacts or glasses, please bring a case for them.
  • Bring your insurance card(s)
  • Please don't wear any makeup if you’re having surgery anywhere on your face. If you’re having surgery on your hand or foot,  please don't wear nail polish on the operative hand or foot.
  • Clothing: Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that will fit over whatever type of dressing you will have. Eye patients and patients having hand/arm surgery should wear short, loose sleeves. You will be asked to store your clothing in a bag during surgery, so keep that in mind as well.

Medications:

  • You may take your morning dose of any heart or blood pressure medicines you take except water pills (diuretics).
  • If you are taking Coumadin or Aspirin or any other type of blood thinner, please check with your surgeon and/or primary doctor about discontinuing these prior to the surgery.
  • If you take insulin, please contact your primary doctor for instructions. In general, we suggest you take half of your normal dose as long as your blood sugar is > 100. Please also bring your insulin along with you.
  • If you use an inhaler, please bring it with you

The Nurse from The Center will call you a few days before your surgery to let you know the time to arrive for surgery and to answer any questions you may have. If you have questions prior to that, please don’t hesitate to call us. If you have received a Health History questionnaire, please fill it out and return it to your doctor’s office or the Center as soon as possible.
